Bela Bartók’s Romanian Folk Dances, as arranged by Zoltán Székely for violin and piano, have been a part of my repertoire from a fairly young age. I’ve done a few subtly strange things to this piece on occasion, but this represents the most extreme. Really it’s this piece in sonic material only, an abstract sculpted form out of its constituents, and a shadowy memory of its field-recorded folklore beginnings stands in blistering sunlight on granite hills, many thousands of kilometres from its ancient source.
