about

The Gonje is an instrument that has mystical importance to me. 1-stringed meditation bowl shouting the cry of Northern Ghana. A Sahelian violin brought to the Dagomba people by their Burkina Faso grandfathers and mothers. Used to back Islamic songs of praise and dances to the glory of the Chief. I received lessons from a master player and dance instructor at the University of Ghana Music School/Institute of African Studies at Legon, Accra. His name is Shaibu Abdulai Iddrisu. A proud Dagomba man, he told me his people's stories and acquired me a Gonje. Taught me a few important songs. This piece, recorded live at Audiopollen in Brisbane, Australia, December 2013 shortly after my return from living in Ghana for a year, is a response to my teacher's challenge: "make gonje your own. Tell your own story - only then are you a real gonje player." The initiated will hear a few strains of traditionals in there - "Wa Sa Ba Fa Da Ba", "Kun Tag Zaa Wuni Zaligu" and "Sal-nim Bcri Na Wuni Ny3bu B3ku Tooi Ny3o".
